Norway’s Location Advantage
for Green Ammonia Production

There are three key reasons why Norway is an ideal location for the production of emission-free green ammonia: Firstly, the country benefits from abundant natural resources, with around 98-99% of its electricity generated from renewable sources, predominantly hydropower. Additionally, Norway‘s rugged coastline makes it well-suited for both onshore and offshore wind projects, with several large-scale initiatives currently in progress. Secondly, Norway already boasts established value chains and infrastructure for ammonia production, which has historically been used in the fertilizer industry. Thirdly, given Norway‘s status as a maritime nation with a commercial shipping industry and a more than century-long history of ammonia production, the country is at the forefront of efforts to develop green ammonia as a fuel for sea-based transportation. Furthermore, Norway is spearheading the development of appropriate combustion engines to facilitate the use of green ammonia in shipping logistics.

NY Fuels is developing two green ammonia production plants for the maritime sector. These plants use water electrolysis and nitrogen capture systems to produce CO2-free fuel, fertilizer, and industrial ammonia. The first facility, Project Southeast, has an initial capacity of 200,000 tons per year and a potential scale-up. The project is powered by renewable energy and includes a deep-sea quay. Feasibility study for the project is underway. Final investment decisions are planned for 2025 and the operational date is scheduled for 2027/28.
